Inside the World of Seed to Skin with Jeanette Thottrup

From nature’s bounty to science’s precision, Seed to Skin Tuscany

Born on the breathtaking grounds of Borgo Santo Pietro, Seed to Skin is redefining luxury skincare with a philosophy rooted in holistic wellness and mindfulness. Seed to Skin has gained a loyal following even within the Querido collection at Passalacqua and Villa Treville – both embracing the brand for embodying the “made in Italy” philosophy.

We sat down with founder Jeanette Grøn Thottrup to explore her remarkable story and the brand’s commitment to bringing the healing power of nature to our skin.

What inspired you to start Seed to Skin, and how did your journey in skincare begin?

J: Seed to Skin was born out of my personal healing journey, which began when I was trying to conceive my son, Vincent. It was a transformative time during which I explored alternative therapies, herbal remedies, and dietary changes to improve my health. I discovered that natural remedies were incredibly powerful, not only for internal healing but also for external care.

I wanted to create a skincare line that bridged the gap between nature and science, focusing on traceability and guiding people towards natural healing. I studied natural medicine at Neal’s Yard in London, initially concentrating on internal health, but my interest in skincare grew as I explored their skincare line and farms. This journey laid the foundation for Seed to Skin—a brand rooted in personal healing, scientific innovation, and the belief that nature provides the most effective solutions.

Could you share the story behind the name “Seed to Skin”?

J: The name “Seed to Skin” reflects our philosophy of transparency and our commitment to sourcing the highest-quality ingredients. It emphasises the importance of every step in the process, from cultivating nutrient-rich soil to delivering effective products. Soil health is fundamental to the potency of our ingredients, and we ensure every ingredient is as fresh and local as possible.

“Seed to Skin” is more than a name—it’s a holistic approach to skincare. It’s about aligning skincare with an overall way of life that includes mindful self-care and a balanced diet. It’s a philosophy that connects the wellness of the earth to the wellness of our bodies.

Your products emphasise natural and sustainable ingredients. How do you source them, and why are they important to you?

J: Our ingredient sourcing is deeply intentional. We take a vertical integration approach, which means we oversee every step, from cultivation to the final product. For ingredients we cannot grow ourselves, we work with micro suppliers and growers around the world, visiting them personally to ensure they meet our rigorous standards. We avoid factories, collaborating directly with growers to understand how their practices impact potency and sustainability.

Before we include any ingredient, we put it through extensive testing, sometimes evaluating 50 samples from 10 different countries to find the perfect one. Once selected, the ingredient undergoes further testing to confirm its efficacy and compatibility. This thorough process ensures that every product delivers the highest quality and integrity.

What role does the Borgo Santo Pietro farm play in the creation of Seed to Skin products?

J: The BSP farm is the heart of Seed to Skin. Located in a mineral-rich thermal environment, it serves as both a testing ground and a source for many of our raw ingredients. Our farm has specialised facilities for herb processing, including infused oils, distillations, and drying techniques. The unique clay-like soil, rich in minerals, enhances the properties of the plants we grow.

The farm is also a creative hub where we experiment with custom herb blends and test their potency at every stage of production. It acts as a “third lab” where raw materials are carefully processed before entering the laboratory for product development. This seamless integration of nature and science is what makes Seed to Skin truly special.

What sets Seed to Skin apart from other luxury skincare brands?

J: Seed to Skin’s approach is rare in the skincare industry. We practise vertical integration, meaning we control every stage of production, from ingredient sourcing to product formulation. This allows us to ensure unparalleled quality and innovation. Our herb processing plant and close collaboration with scientists enable us to experiment with unorthodox solutions, blending various oils and herbs to create groundbreaking formulas.

Another unique aspect is our spa services. We don’t just sell products; we provide comprehensive skincare treatments and training. Our spa protocols are designed to deliver both immediate results and long-term benefits, setting us apart from brands that focus solely on retail products.

What’s your own skincare routine, and do you have a favourite Seed to Skin product?

J: My skincare routine includes a few personal favourites from the Seed to Skin line. I start with The Divine Cleanse to purify my skin, followed by The Black Magic mask for a detoxifying boost. After that, I apply The Fermen’Tonic, a powerful face tonic to tone and prepare my skin for the next steps. I then use The Golden Dew and The Biom’sphere to hydrate and support my skin barrier. At night, I finish with The Night Force for deep nourishment.

Are there any new products or innovations you’re excited about?

J: Yes, we are working on several exciting innovations! One of our key projects is developing a new encapsulation form for active molecules, which will enhance the delivery and efficacy of our products. Our team is constantly pushing the boundaries of what natural skincare can achieve, and I’m thrilled to see how these advancements will help our customers achieve even better results.
